Working with Multimedia Transcripts

A multimedia transcript consists of two documents: an audio or video file + an associated transcript with time stamps. You need to add the audio or video file first to your project, then you can import one or multiple transcripts for the document.

  • The transcript and the audio or video files can be opened side-by-side.

  • Synchronized Scrolling: When you play the multimedia file, ATLAS.ti highlights the associated segments in the transcript. You find an instruction below.

  • You can add and remove timestamps.

Format for Timestamps

The following timestamp formats are supported:

FormatTranscription Software
#hh:mm:ss-x#Easytranscript, f4 & f5transcript
[hh:mm:ss]Transcribe
[hh:mm:ss.xx]HyperTRANSCRIBE, Inqscribe, Transcriva
[hh:mm:ss.xxx]HyperTRANSCRIBE, Inqscribe, Transcriva
(h:mm:ss.xx)Transana

Adding a Transcript

Add a multimedia file to your project.

Load the multimedia document, open the drop-down menu for Transcripts in the toolbar, and select Import Transcript.

Select the transcript that belongs to the audio or video file and click Open.

  • The transcript will be imported into the project and loaded next to the multimedia file.

  • You will see a new entry in the Project Explorer under the Multimedia Transcripts branch.

It is possible to associated multiple transcripts with the same audio or video file, e.g. if you have different language versions.

Display of Timestamps

  • You see a list of time stamps in the audio or video document pane. If you want to see more or less, you can grab the header with your mouse and pull it up or down.

  • In the multimedia document, a green line indicates the timestamp.

  • In the transcript, you see green boxes indicating the start and end positions of time stamps.

Activating an Audio or Video Document with Transcript

From the Project Explorer or Document Manager, load either the transcript, or the multimedia file.

Open the drop-down menu for Transcripts in the toolbar and select the first entry, which is the association between the transcript, and the multimedia file. If you have associated more than one transcript with a multimedia file, there will be more entries. Select the one you want to load.

Synchronized Scrolling

To play the document and view the transcript at the same time, activate Synchronized Scrolling in the toolbar and play the multimedia file. The associated text segment will be highlighted while the multimedia file is playing.

If the document does not contain timestamps, ATLAS.ti estimates the synchronization based on the length of the multimedia file and the transcript. You can add time stamps for a better synchronization.

Editing Timestamps

You can either modify the position of an existing timestamp, add new ones, or delete timestamps.

In the toolbar, click on the option Edit Timestamp.

Moving a Timestamp

To move the position of an existing timestamp, grab the timestamp in the multimedia document shown as green line with your mouse, and move it to a different position.

Adding a Timestamp

In the transcript, put the cursor at the position where you want to add the time stamp. In the multimedia document, position the play-head (red line) to the corresponding position. In the toolbar, click Add Timestamp.

Deleting a Timestamp

Select one or multiple timestamps in the timestamp list, right-click and select Delete.

Deleting an Association

Open the transcript branch, right-click on the multimedia file, and select Delete.

This does not remove the document from the project. The multimedia file and transcript are still available in the Documents branch.

If you want to remove an associated document from the project, you need to delete the association first.
