Network View Options

The display characteristics of the nodes can be altered in a variety of ways.

To change the node or link style, select the View tab in a network editor.

Overview: If you select this option, a schematic overview of the network is shown.

Fit to Window: This option adjusts the network to fit the size of the currently opened network editor.

Grid: The grid helps you to position nodes.

Snap: Snapping allows an object to be easily positioned in alignment with grid lines, guidelines or another object, by causing it to automatically jump to an exact position when the user drags it to the proximity of the desired location.

Link Label: You can define three labels for each relation:

  • (relation) name
  • short name
  • symbolic name

See Creating & Modifying Relations. Depending on what you want to see in your network, you can switch the label that is shown. If you change to a different label, this applies to all relations in the network.

Node Styles: Nodes can be displayed in four different styles:

  • simple
  • flat (default)
  • gradient
  • shadow

Instead of describing the various looks, go ahead and try out each style and select the one that you like best or that is most suitable for the task at hand.

Some of these options you also find in the Layout/Style section in the main Network ribbon.

Style

Comments: If activated the comments of all nodes that have comments are displayed.

Code-Document Connections: At times it is interesting to see which codes have been applied to a document, or a document group. When coding the data, you apply codes to quotations, which are part of documents, but you do not directly apply codes to a document. Therefore, there are no direct links between documents and codes. In order to see those connections, you need to activate this option.

Code-Document and Code-Document Group connections are shown as blue lines.

Preview: You can activate a preview for documents, quotations and memos. Audio and video documents or quotations can be played in the preview window. If you only want to see the preview of selected entities, right-click the entity and select the Preview option from the context menu.

In ATLAS.ti Windows, there is no preview for audio and video quotations in networks.

Frequencies: If activated it displays the groundedness and density of code and memo nodes in the network.

  • Groundedness: It shows how many quotations are linked to a code or memo.

  • Density:

    • Number of code - code connections.
    • Number of codes and memos a memo is connected to.
    • Number of codes a quotation is coded to.

Show Node Icons: The node type icon can be switched on and off for all nodes. The small image used as a node icon increases the distinctiveness of the nodes, especially when a mixture of node types exists in a network. Nonetheless, when space runs low, you may prefer to switch off the icons.
